Roya Daneshmand

Focal point, RISE (Centre for Social Accountability at Northern Ontario School of Medicine University)

After completing her Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition Science and becoming a registered dietitian, Roya pursued further education in Public Health and Nutrition with a focus on nutrition and epidemiology in Finland. During this enriching experience, she enhanced her quantitative data analysis skills by working with one of the largest cohort studies in Finland. She then moved to Canada to pursue her PhD in Applied Human Nutrition to understand the implementation of nutrition science and interventions to promote a healthy lifestyle. During her PhD, Roya gained valuable insights into the various barriers that impede access to interprofessional health teams across different regions in Ontario. This knowledge has been instrumental in informing her research and work in the northern Ontario learning health systems. This sparked her interest in learning more about health equity and access to healthcare in Northern Ontario.

Roya began her work in Northern Ontario as a researcher with the Marathon Family Health Team, where she provided support for rural and Northern projects. This experience motivated her to pursue her current role as the senior Research Coordinator and Project Manager at TBRHRI, where she works with NORTHH, which is the primary care practice-based research network in Northern Ontario. NORTHH's projects focus on using EMR data to understand primary healthcare service provision in Northern Ontario and how to utilize the data for quality improvement, working towards the Quintuple aim. She also collaborated with the team at NOSM U Centre for Social Accountability to develop a data framework to recognize an enabling infrastructure required for OHTs in Northwestern Ontario to support population health management.

In her new role as the RISE focal point, Roya will work closely with Dr. Brianne Wood and the team at NOSM U Centre for Social Accountability, as part of the partnership between RISE and NOSM U, to support OHTs in Northern Ontario with their population health management.
