Cameron Taheri

Queen Elizabeth Scholars in Strengthening Health Systems (2017)

At the time of the QE Scholarship, Cameron was an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program. He developed an interest in the social determinants of health after conducting research on how patient perspectives of their healthcare experiences differ according to gender. His research interests centre around utilizing multi-stakeholder approaches to addressing barriers surrounding learner engagement and patient education. He also worked in partnership with McMaster’s MacPherson Institute and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

As an outbound Queen Elizabeth Scholar, Cameron travelled to Trinidad and Tobago to intern at the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA). One of Cameron’s primary responsibilities was to write a paper on the effectiveness of knowledge transfer to intermediary groups such as the media, civil society organizations, and professional associations. He specifically looked at evidence-informed messages related to improving healthy diets. Cameron also assisted with the planning arrangements and content development for a Policy Analysis and Development training workshop. He hoped to take what he learned abroad to strengthen our health system in Canada.
