Matthew Yau
Queen Elizabeth Scholars in Strengthening Health Systems (2017)At the time of the QE Scholarship, Matthew was an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program. As the editor-in-chief of The Meducator, McMaster’s Undergraduate Health Sciences Journal, and an editor for the McMaster Undergraduate Journal of Law and Politics, Matthew developed an interest in the universal dissemination and practical application of research, particularly as it pertains to health care management.
As an outbound Queen Elizabeth Scholar, Matthew sought to apply his knowledge and experiences in academic publishing to the Practical Approach to Care Kit, a clinical decision making tool. His internship was based jointly at the British Medical Journal in London, England, and the Knowledge Translation Unit at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. During his time at these institutions, he hoped to gain valuable insight into the localization of healthcare policies, and document how provision of care reacts to healthcare innovation. He hosted stakeholder dialogues to facilitate transfer of information between allied healthcare professionals, and to gain clear perspectives on PACK user experiences. Moreover, he evaluated the impact of the PACK Programme on existing health systems arrangements. He also ensured that local PACK guidelines were based in evidence found in global WHO guidelines.
